Horsepond over the years...
Horsepond stands alongside The Market Place, The Bailey Lock-up and All Saints
Church as one of the defining historical landmarks of Castle Cary.
The Horsepond is close to the source of the River Cary and over the centuries it
has had many uses; a place for livestock to drink, a constant water source powering a mill to grind flour for a local bakery, a home for swans, the venue for
an annual “mock jousting” event “The Greasy Pole” and very recently a
bank holiday boat regatta.
Its defining feature now though is as a respectful
backdrop to the war memorial that remembers the fallen of the
two World Wars
